Overland Park is a city in Johnson county in the U.S. state of KS. A suburb of Kansas City, it lies about 12 miles southwest of the city’s downtown and is the largest suburb in the metro area. As of the 2010 Census, the city population was 173,372. Overland Park has consistently ranked in the top 10 of CNN/Money and Money magazine’s 100 Best Cities to Live in the United States.Also in 2010, Money Magazine rated Overland Park,  the 7th best city to live in the United States. Additionally, the city was ranked as one of “The Best Places to Raise Your Kids in 2009” and was ranked 3rd for “America’s 10 Best Places to Grow Up”.

Background Information

The city was founded by William B. Strang Jr. in 1905, when he purchased 600 acres along side a military road and plotted subdivisions which is now part of the old downtown area. Strang sponsored the first airplane shows by the Wright brothers west of the Mississippi river on December 24, 1909.

On May 20, 1960  the city was named a “first class city” making it one of the newest communities in Johnson County. Its population in 1960 was 28,085 and its size was right at 13 square miles. By 1990 the population had quadrupled too 111,790. Overland Park is now the 2nd largest city in the state of Kansas with a population of more than 173,000 and a land area of over 75 square miles.

 

Culture and Recreation

There are more than 1,800 acres of park land in the city, hence the name Overland Park. Many of the 72 parks have multiple features including the  following: sand volleyball, hiking and biking trails, playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, and shelters for picnic’s.

The city’s features include:

Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Garden, which is the largest botanical garden in the Kansas City metro area at 300 acres.

Oak Park Mall which is one of the area’s top shopping locations with Nordstrom, Dillard’s, Macy’s, JC Penney’s and an additional 200+ stores.

Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead, a 12 acre farm that has more than 200 animals, fish ponds, hay rides and more. Named the top family attraction in Kansas City by Nickelodeon Channel in 2008.

Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, located on the campus of the Johnson County Community College.

Overland Park also contains a Convention Center and three Community Centers.
